I’m pleased to announce that Technoranki now uses blog traffic data when calculating blog ranks!
I’ve made some tweaks to the algorithm too, so you should notice the ranking order change quite a bit over the next few days. This process takes a few days because the data in the BritBlog database has to be synchronized with the data in the Technoranki database.
So what next? Well, I’ve got a lot of work to do on the actual Technoranki web site (like add a search tool, add full chart listings, and enable ’self signups’), so I hope to start on this in the next week or so.
If you’re a BritBlog member and want to take part in the ‘Top of the Blogs‘ charts, sign in to your BritBlog account, and grab the Technoranki tracking code for your web site.
If you’re not a BritBlog member but still want to discover what your blog rank is, then please hold on just a little while longer
As always, any comments, suggestions or feedback you may have is greatly appreciated!

Securing a top ten ranking has obviously massaged my ego. Thanks!
I realise that the Technoranki ranking is not a chart position, but something akin to a Google PageRank. However, it would be nice to have a little graphic that displays one’s chart position (BlogTopSites do this) for show offs like myself.

Hoorah!

Stephen, you mean something like “Ranked 7 out of 4000″? Talk about showing off
I am looking at doing a few things along these lines. As always, watch this space!

Dear Mark,
I have a problem, I rank 3 and don’t understand what that means. Previously you said the ranks are from 10 to 0. Is 10 the best and 0 the worst? Or is it like Top of the Pops where you have a top ten rundown and so 0 would be the best.
Either way, I’ve noticed Mr Piggy Bank is in at 3 with me, so I’ve hired a contract killer to find the whereabouts of Mr Piggy and have him executed.
Playing dirty? You ain’t seen nothing yet!
Kindest Regards.
Christine (Rank 3)

Hi Christine,
I wouldn’t worry too much about the rank at the moment – they are in a state of flux as the traffic stuff kicks in anyway. You are correct though; 10 = high, 0 = low — just like Google page rank.
Basically technoranki looks for information about your blog from lots of sources on the internet and pulls them all together to create a score. This is joined with information gathered directly from your blog, and finally with traffic data collected by the technoranki tracker code.
This information is all pulled together and fiddled around with to create a rank.
The rank goes from 10 (high) to 0 (low), and is normally distributed* across this range. So if everyone with a rank of three dropped out, blogs with a rank of two and four would be pulled into this void. This is why we really want more blogs in the database — to give us a much better cross section of blogs to base the ranks on.
* It’s actually a beta distribution, but the results are similar. And there are actually lot’s more 0’s than there should be because we don’t have data on all the blogs in the database yet…

Christine, I have one thing to say to you and that is this: Oink.

Is it possible to find out your rank if you didn’t opt for the badge that displays your rank? When I go to get the code it appears to tell me to register with technoranki first (er, IIRC), but I already have and I don’t want to break anything.

Hi Walker,
Yes, it will be possible soon. I’m going to add it to the blog profile page (the page you go to when you click on the little ‘info’ icon next to a blog), so this should do the job.

Nice idea!

OK, it’s done.

I notice that there are several blogs in the top 50 at the moment that aren’t displaying the technoranki image. Does this suggest a bug within, or an artefact of, the system?
February 27, 2006 at 8:08 pm
It’s an artefact!
Technorati is based on a range of data (and sources), not just traffic.
A blog needn’t score well in all tests to get a good rank.

help!
when i go into technoranki the window which is supposed to have the code is empty!!…confused….is it because i’m on a Mac?
March 3, 2006 at 4:06 pm
Yep, probably. There are a few bugs with safari. Can you use firefox? This does work on mac, so I’m told. Dorry about this – will try and get it fixed at some point.

Everytime I click on the technoranki link, it tells me my blog hasn’t been added yet. Does anyone know how long it takes?
