Blog charts coming back in house

April 22, 2007

The Blog Ranking service, Technoranki, is going to be brought back in house and reflect only ‘top’ British blogs. I’m taking this move to free up more time for BritBlog, which is really the site I need to focus most attention.

As Technoranki never opened up its doors to none-BritBlog members this shouldn’t cause any issues. It will make management of the blogs much easier (as I won’t have to track spam blogs in two places), and it will mean the problem of getting new blogs added to Technoranki will be gone.

It also means that the charts will only reflect British Blogs, which has to make it of more interest to all our members!

This change will take time to plan and implement, so keep an eye out for updates here. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to leave a comment below or drop me an email.

The blog is back!

April 9, 2007

I’ve finally upgraded this blog to the latest version of WordPress, so sorry for having it offline for such a long while. I think that the XML-RPC interface to the blog was being hammered a bit by spammers which was having an adverse affect on the stability of our web server. I was a little concerned about a security issue with the WordPress code too, so felt it best to take the site down for a while.

So where are things at the minute? Well I’m sorry to say they’re pretty much where they were a month ago: I’m still waiting for our new server to be built and configured, and for some database work to be done for the new code. All in all very disappointing.

On the plus side the Spring has well and truly sprung, and we’ve had some fantastic weather over the Easter break. Hope you all had a great time and didn’t eat too much chocolate ;-)

I think we should be thinking about having another blogmeet soon – any suggestions for a location? I heard a mention of holding one in Southampton…

Server upgrades

March 2, 2007

Just to let you know that our hosting company swapped out the faulty memory on our server a couple of days ago, so with luck this will improve system uptime. Sorry for all the recent outages – I hope this hasn’t impacted anyone too much.

In other news, we took delivery of a brand new server to replace the existing britblog one a couple of days ago. The new box still needs to be built and tested and it will be several weeks before we pop it in the rack up in London. Still, it’s a step in the right direction. When this box goes live we’ll have a slightly improved version on the code running too, ready for some nice new features to be rolled out over the next few months.

Sorry this is all taking such a long time, but we’re slowly edging forwards.

In case people are wondering if I had vanished off the face of the earth, I recently moved home which has meant I’ve been offline for the last couple of weeks. Nancy has done a great job keeping on top of the new blogs, and I’ll try and get around to answering all the emails that have built up as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy this wonderful weather!

Progress

January 25, 2007

Hey all, just thought I’d give those of you that are interested a little update — it probably seems like nothing is going on around here these days!

As I’ve alluded to many times in the past, we’re in the process of re-writing the site. As well as re-writing lots of the website code, we’re also moving to a new database platform and this process isn’t without it’s problems….!

Anyway, things are progressing well and we should have an interim release for you soon. Although it won’t fix some of the niggley problems with the site (like only having one blog per user), it will introduce a few nice new features and should be a lot faster: a good step in the right direction.

As always, thanks to Nancy for keeping on top of the new registrations – we really would be in a quagmire without her.

I’ve got lots of emails sitting in my inbox at the moment with various queries about the site (“why was I rejected?”, “can you reset my password?” etc.), and I’ll get to these as soon as I can. I’ve got even more than usual going on at the moment so please bear with me.

Quick catch up

November 1, 2006

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about the developments ‘behind the scenes’, so I thought I’d just post a short update for any interested parties.

As you may know, we’ve been talking about a total redesign of the site from the ground up since March (I can’t believe how time flies!). Sadly demands on my time (read “day job”) have held this up somewhat, but that’s not to say we’ve been doing nothing.

We got our second server installed in July, which has taken a lot of the load of our older server (meaning a more reliable service for you). This new server will also soon be running a new ping server and spider combination that we hope to be testing in the wild over the next few months.

So this is Phase 1. We will be able to keep an eye on all our member blogs and find out what everyone is talking about. Not only will this allow us to say what the British blogsphere is talking about at any point in time, but it will allow us to segment the British blogsphere by location or category – meaning a very local or niche view of discussions (blog posts) will be possible. Exciting stuff!

You’ll probably see a new design go live with this new functionality too. So that’s the easy bit.

Phase 2 will have to be a total re-write of the directory and membership code. The new version of the site will introduce so many new features that we’re going to have to start from scratch. We’ve been tinkering with this for a while now but it’s still a fairly long way off I’m afraid.

And what about Phase 3? Well we’ve still got loads of great ideas that we want to put in place which I’d love to tell you about, but it’s probably best for me to firm these up first ;-)

Finally, for any new members waiting to get their blogs approved, please continue to bear with me. The queue is going down slowly, but has an amazing ability to grow back up if I have a day away! There are lots of spam blogs in the queue which aren’t always easy to spot, so blame the delays on them if you want to moan. Thanks for your continued patience.

That’s about it I think. Have I missed anything? If anyone is interested in a Christmas blogmeet in London, please let me know. And to make sure you keep up to date with any news from us, please consider either subscribing to our blog RSS feed or to our daily blogmail service (daily digest, only sent out when there is something new to send).

Tip: Geocode your blog

October 9, 2006

By now you may well have heard about geotagging – it’s especially popular with photographers at the moment who like to geotag their photos and overlay them on a map (cf. flickr). Another example is GeoURL, which uses location information in your website meta tags to identify it’s location. The GeoURL database can then be searched so that you can find websites near yours, for example.

Well as you may know, we’re currently working on a new version of BritBlog (yes I know, it’s taking ages….), and one of the features I’d like to have is a decent map of British bloggers. Our old one stopped working when our postcode to OS Grid Reference conversion trick broke, and it was restricted to just the UK anyway, which wasn’t great for our expats.

So I’d like to update the map, and there are lots of things we’ll be able to do. Apart from just plotting all the blogs on a map, you’ll be able to search for blogs near you, look for recently updated blogs near you, we could show all of the most recently updated blogs on a map, all the blogs talking about knitting on a map, and loads more things besides! But for this to work, we need to know where you blog from. You can tell us where you are based by geocoding your blog.

Geocode your blog

So, what I’d like to ask you to do is to start adding geo meta tags to your blog templates. You don’t have to tell us exactly where you live, but if you can do it to within a few kilometres that would be useful. Over the next few months we can gather this data and experiment with it. More details on how to do this can be found on the GeoURL web site (you may as well add yourselves to GeoURL while you are there…), but essentially you need to add the following code to the block of your web page template:

<meta name="ICBM" content="52.12345,-0.54321" />
<meta name="DC.title" content="My Blog Title" />
<meta name="geo.position" content="52.12345;-0.54321" />

Coordinates are in the form of a latitude and longitude, separated by a comma, for example: 47.98481,-71.42124. Western hemisphere longitudes and Southern hemisphere latitudes are negative. That means if you live to the West of Greenwich, then your longitude will be negative. You actually don’t need the third line in the example above, but its good practice to put it in.

Working out your coordinates

One way to work out what your coordinates should be is to use Google maps:

  • Go to Google maps and search for your location.
  • When you’ve found where you live, double click on the rough spot. This will cause Google maps to re-centre on your location and zoom in a bit.
  • Now click the ‘link to this page’ link on the top right of the Google maps screen.
  • Grab the new URL from the address bar, and grab your coordinates! &ll=52.1234,-0.4321&spn=.

I’m sure there are other ways to work out your location; this is just one of them.

So does that make sense? I’m really keen to get this up and running, so if you have any queries about this, or if I can help at all, please either leave a comment below or drop me an email.

Finally, don’t forget the blogmeet in Surrey later this month. It’s on the 28th October in Guildford. Be there or be square :-P

Member Interests Cloud

August 16, 2006

I’ve just updated the member interests page with… wait for it… a tag cloud! Yay!

OK, it’s not a tag cloud in the true sense as it’s made up of member interests (as indicated in your member profile) rather than tags, but I’m hoping this gives a more interesting view on things than the old long member interests index.

If you’re not listing your interests on your profile then go and do it now! (Click on ‘Edit your blog profile’.) Member interests are probably the busiest part of the site, and as such they are probably the best way to drive relevant traffic to your blog.

As always, if you have any suggestions on ways we can improve this site then do let me know. Oh, and don’t forget the BritBlog design competition, and if you’ve not got your blog ranking tracker code installed yet then go and get that too (you need to be signed in)!

Blog ranks update

August 13, 2006

It’s been a long time coming, but the Technoranki blog ranking system is nearly back up and running again.

Everything has been moved onto a new server, but there will be a few odd things happening over the next week or so as the DNS is updated and the ranking system catches up with itself.

It will take a while for technoranki to get up to speed (it needs at least a week’s worth of traffic data), so please bear with us while this happens.

All BritBlog members who were listed in the directory as of yesterday have now been entered into the technoranki system. New members will be added automatically in due course.

Once technoranki is running properly again then BritBlog can start getting blog ranks back out of it, and the Top of the Blogs chart can start being updated again.

So I think we’re looking at about two weeks for everything to be up and running properly.

Finally, because technoranki isn’t really anything to do with BritBlog (it’s a totally separate project) I’m also going to start a technoranki category over in my own blog. I’ll publish any information about technoranki over there from now on.

BritBlog design competition

July 31, 2006

I think it’s about time we gave BritBlog a facelift, don’t you? However, as I’m not really gifted in the art of design I thought it may be fun to see if there are any members out there keen to have a go themselves. Any takers?

The new look should be clean, lightweight, and make good use of screen real-estate. It should also be XHTML and CSS compliant. Accessibility is very important too. While I’d like to keep a degree of “Britishness” in the design, it doesn’t have to be as heavily based on the Union Flag as it is at the moment!

To demonstrate your examples, we’d be looking for two example pages fully marked up. One page should be the homepage, and the other should be a directory page. (They should be static HTML pages). We will need to have space for a Google Adsense banner (or something of comparable size), and the site sponsor links that are on the left at the moment. The yellow adverts at the top of the location page are less important.

The site is going through a total re-write at the moment, so don’t feel too constrained to the current features etc.

As I’ve said, I’m not a designer, so I don’t really know what other information you may need. However, feel free to ask, either using the comments below or by dropping me an email.

When (if) we get a few designs in we’ll run a little vote to see which design our members like the most.

Prize: Tricky one this; perhaps you can just be proud to be the winner! Seriously, all participants will certainly get some publicity/visibility (we’ll have a gallery), and the winner will be credited in the footer of all BritBlog pages based on their design.

Deadlines: shall we look to have all designs in by 30th September?

Anyway, I hope some of you fancy taking up the challenge. If not you, then perhaps you know someone who would like to? Let’s face it – you haven’t got a lot to beat with the current design1!

1 Sorry Tony, but the site is looking a bit dated now :)

New server finally in

July 5, 2006

I spent this afternoon mostly sitting in traffic. It took nearly two and a half hours to drive from work (in Surrey) to London Docklands where I deposited our second server at Sovereign House. Just over an hour later the box was installed in the rack and plugged in (thanks to the guys from Areti), and I was then back on the road for the journey home. Not such a bad return journey, only taking an hour and a half…

It will take a bit of time before this new server is set up properly, but it will be worth the wait. Our existing server has been feeling the strain a bit lately, so this new one will be used to take some of that load. It will also give us a good development environment for the new version of the site which I’m really excited about. We’ve got some great new features planned, but I’ll talk about that another time.
